DESCRIPTION:
In 1945 the Allies returned home with much technical information from German research concerning jet engines and swept wings. Though the USAAF had already deployed an early batch of jet fighters, Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars, to Italy in 1945, their centrifugal-flow engines had limited scope for further development compared with the axial-flow engines used by the Germans. This second volume of Kev Darling's history of American prototype and experimental aircraft tells the full story of these fascinating aircraft, from the primitive jets of the immediate post-war period to the F-22 and F-23 stealth fighters that represent the pinnacle of modern warplane design.. Also, it was obvious that a new breed of airframes was needed to take advantage of the huge power increase offered by jet engines: the answer was the swept wing carefully coupled with a blended fuselage
Save your money. JCAL Another person posted:"If you want an excellent book on these projects, it is recommend that the historian purchase Kev Darling's American X & Y Planes, Vol. 1: Experimental Aircraft to 1945 (Crowood Aviation)" - So I purchased Vol I and Vol II. They're reasonably inexpensive and from Crowood which usually means a pretty workman like job if not outstanding. The descriptions are brief and for many aircraft there is no illustration. Volume II is still a significant improvement over Vol I simply due to excellent coverage of the Vought XC-142 and probably the best write up I've seen of the XFV-12. I. Excellent Information Information contained in Volume 2 is not necessarily a re-hash of older material. There is some repetition from other books, but this one contains some "new" information that supplements other authors. Therefore, this volume is an excellent adjunct to the serious aviation historian, and well-worth the cost.. Gary said "2 great books" according to Gary. i have both books ,small but great in information on american aviation from the beginning.very well written with many fine pictures.i highly recommend these 2 books for any aviation fan .thank you Gary. great books. i have both books ,small but great in information on american aviation from the beginning.very well written with many fine pictures.i highly recommend these "2 great books" according to Gary. i have both books ,small but great in information on american aviation from the beginning.very well written with many fine pictures.i highly recommend these 2 books for any aviation fan .thank you Gary. books for any aviation fan .thank you Gary
