I should have researched this book more thoroughly before buying I should have researched this book more thoroughly before buying it. Shame on me, but I usually don't put a book down once I have started reading. This is not really an historical novel, but simply a romance set in the time of ancient Greece at the fall of Thebes to the Macedonians and Phillip, Alexander's father. As one reviewer wrote, it is gay porn meets historical novel; heavy on the first, very light on the second. The story line could take place anywhere, the plot has been replicated from a thousand other novels (new lover muscles in to take an inheritance from progeny), and the dialogue is straight ou. Great Plot, Disappointing Execution The Rise and Fall of the Sacred Band of Thebes opens on that fateful day on the plain of Chaeronea, when Philip and his golden son wipe out almost all of the Sacred Band.
