In this autobiography, she details her lifelong struggle with her burgeoning femaleness and the path she followed to become a female, both physically and mentally. All rights reserved. At a certain point, though, she realized that she couldn't suppress her desire to live as a female and so eventually went through all the steps to become female, including sexual reassignment surgery. But Boylan's well-written and informative book is a worthy contribution to the body of work on this subject. For 40 years, the author lived as a man, seemingly happy and even marrying a woman and fathering two children. From Booklist Boylan, English professor and author of the critically accla
"club chose this and I didn't think I would like it. Fortunately" according to Merry T.. My book club chose this and I didn't think I would like it. Fortunately, I found it hard to put down. Boylan tells her story deftly and with humor and understanding. Hers is one of the success stories of those who are transgender, and she knows it. While depicting his, then her experiences as a transgender person, he/she relates the psychological hurdles inherent in such a life. She also gives us the other side of the coin, letting us know about some of the heartbreaking stories of others not lucky enough to have supportive friends and family members. Highly recommend this book for anyone experiencing questions about their gender Carole Hullinger Quick read!Highly recommend this book for anyone experiencing questions about their gender identity as well as Anyone who knows and loves someone in transition. Jenny tells her story from the heart and a bit of humor. Addresses all her personal struggles as well as those of her family, friends and coworkers. Personally, as the wife of someone who has begun his own journey in transition, this gave me more insight into the years of pain that transgendered people experience before they make the decision to come out. It gives hope that love prevails. "Beautiful, balanced, hilarious, an all-round great read" according to mulcahey. Once in a while, the balance may tip a little too far in the "I'm trying to make this entertaining" direction, but that's the only non-gushing observation I can make. Boylan's not just a fine writer, but the sort of writer you wish you could sit down and have lunch with. I'll read pretty much anything she wants to write.
Now with a new epilogue from the author and an afterword from Deirdre "Grace" Boylan, She’s Not There shines a light on the often confounding process of accepting ourselves.. As James evolves into Jennifer in scenes that are by turns tender, startling, and witty, a marvelously human perspective emerges on issues of love, sex, and the fascinating relationship between our physical and intuitive selves. Told in Boylan’s fresh voice, She’s Not There is about a person bearing and finally revealing a complex secret. The provocative bestseller She’s Not There is the winning, utterly surprising story of a person changing genders. By turns hilarious and deeply moving, Jennifer Finney Boylan explores the territory that lies between men and women, examines changing friendships, and rejoices in the redeeming power of family
