A conservationist at a time when only the germs of the conservation movement existed, her advanced thinking did not yet extend to her focus on humankind and her views on her fellows were conventional to the point that some of the ones based on race and ethnicity look downright ugly today. Yet she was an unconventional woman in herself and broke through many of the stereotypes that bound her gender in her day. Never considered great from a literary standpoint, she is sti.
