DESCRIPTION:
"For all in transportation" according to Robert J. Beard. For anyone in transportation, this is a must read. This may be a story from the past but the "checker" operation remains today.. "Enjoyable read" according to Orders. Nice to have books that are well-written and about local goings on in years past. Margean Gladysz will be long remembered in our community.. Five Stars very good book my wife and I read it together
She was there to spot and report back on drunk, stealing, reckless and nutty bus drivers who should be fired. The will never be another book like this. There simply could not be another Margean Gladysz, who as a young woman was paid by Greyhound, Trailways and other companies to ride buses thousands of miles all over the country in the 1940's. And it's all in her diary-like letters that she sent home at the time. --Jim Lehrer, novelist, journalist ( Lehrer NewsHour) and former Trailways bus ticket agent . A Spy on the Bus is a treat and a half. I promise
Her job is to pose as a passenger on the bus and spy on the bus drivers, reporting back any theft, reckless driving, drinking, or anything else that would endanger the passengers or interfere with the company's profits. An adventuresome eighteen-year-old college grad hires on with Greyhound Bus line in 1946 as a company spy. Margean wrote daily letters home to her parents on the farm in Michigan describing her life as a company inspector and other details of her life on the road in the 1940's. This book is the collection of her letters unearthed in an attic in 2003. It's a doozy of a book.
Margean Gladysz is a professional librarian.
