DESCRIPTION:

It's a heartfelt thank-you to the NICU staff. Cathy, their surrogate, was supposed to give birth to healthy baby girls in San Francisco in December, when they were due. Their lungs were so immature, they couldn't breathe without help. It's an intimate look at the surrogacy process. It's a sampling of the pleasures of life in Anchorage. It's an exploration of the medical advances that made it possible for Veronica and Zola to survive and thrive. For John Kruse and Gary Beuschel, it took a village just to have one. Instead, Veronica and Zola were born at 26 weeks, weighing less than two lbs each, with a tenuous grasp on life.Zola and Veronica were so premature, their brains were still developing the circuitry required for managing the basic functions of life. On a late August day in 2003, John and Gary flew with grim urgency from San Francisco, where they live, to Anchorage, where their daughters were soon to be born more than three months premature at Providence Alaska Medical Center. They worried that a gay San Francisco couple would be treated with hostility at a Catholic hospital. They couldn't see or hear. John and Gary went from being baby-care neophytes to diaper-changing, bottle-feeding, baby-wrangling super-dads. Hillary Clinton w

Interesting and sweet, with one big caveat M. Garrison This book is a memoir of sorts about what Gary and John go through during the IVF conception, surrogate pregnancy, birth, and long NICU stay of their twin daughters. I love the amount of detail that goes into it, which really gives a great picture of all the highs and lows of what went on.There's one thing I didn't know about this book when I purchased it, though -- and if I had known this, I might have passed the book by. After the introduction, about 90% of the book is just copied and pasted emails that Gary and John sent . Great story! I stumbled upon this book and fell in love with this less than typical family. The story revolves around a loving and committed gay couple who use a surrogate to have a child. They end up with a beautiful set of twin girls born prematurely. By the second chapter I was rooting for them at every page. This book may be for those of us with open minds about non-traditional families, but it is sweet and real and just a lot of fun.
