DESCRIPTION:

Not only are terms defined directly under their own name, but they are frequently grouped under broader terms. . Definitions are understandable, even when the term defined is technical. The ranges of musical instruments are found under the category of instrument: brass, string, woodwinds, etc. The British background of the authors is demonstrated by especially thorough treatment of the cultures of the British Commonwealth. Charts and graphs are used when helpful. Sports measurements, for example, are found under the name of the sport. Cross-references, which are numerous, are in small capitals. Neither mathematics nor engineering are neglected, but some 33 other categories are covered, such as music, sports, geological time, and military

More than four thousand entries in thirty-five categories provide the etymologies, numerical equivalents, definitions, and usages of measurement terminology.

An almost complete reference. A Customer This is a very complete and useful reference work for anyone who deals with measurements. I have been able to find almost every term I have looked for in this book. Every measurement professional should be able to find a place on their working bookshelf for it. However, there is one glaring omission: the word "metrology" (the science of measurement) is NOT one of the entries in the book!. Simple, but covers all the hard to find things I use this dictionary to clear up with students in my class the hard to find words to do with measurements that they can't seem to grasp. This dictionary covers it all. Things like "net tonnage" and "gross tonnage" are explained in short and simple terms like nowhere else. Recommend having it available to anyone who doesn't know all the confusing math, but wants to know what the various thousands of words to do with measurement mean.
