DESCRIPTION:
This book is a simple, clear and visual introduction to the workings of a steam locomotive, written specifically for those with no technical knowledge. Nevertheless, the book should also appeal to the technically minded, as there are few who understand the steam locomotive in its entirety, a subject which encompasses many engineering subjects including structures, dynamics, thermo-dynamics and fluid flows. To address the needs of today's readers, the complex engineering of the steam locomotive is unraveled by use of a large number of easily understandable diagrams, explaining the function of the components in a step-by-step manner. There is no technical knowledge required on the part of the reader, nor is there any requirement to understand engineering drawings, because the diagrams and explanations are carefully approached. Written to provide a simple explanation of how a steam locomotive works and designed to appeal to the widest possible audience, using clear explanations and diagrams, generous in number yet straightforward in context. Clear and concise. Good comprehensive book on the topic. Peter Akins NIcely married in with the book on "Firing the Steam Locomotive". This book addresses the operation of the engine itself (not so much on the fire management). Very clearly written, with good illustrations of the mechanical workings. Covers some ancillary aspects. steam locos Richard Staley Its good, but seems to be written for a younger person. I would have liked to see more detail. However I have young Grandchildren who like steam engines so it would work well for them.
