"Mark DeCarlo is a Groucho Marx for the '90's."--PEOPLE magazine

Unopened, dirty, and habitually covered with muddy, green crap. It’s about the millions of people around the country who call themselves ‘foodies’—as if the rest of us exist simply on air and water..  A Fork on the Roadcelebrates those survivors and their progeny: It’s about the kinds of people who will spend 30% of their yearly salary building a BBQ Trailer with a homemade logo painted in flames on the side just to win a $50 contest 500 miles from home. History is written by the survivors.  Join the master comedian on his journey across the United States to visit these people and their foods in their natural habitats—places like the French Quarter of New Orleans, lush Maui resorts, and the Annual Road Kill Cook-off Festival in West Virginia. But for every ‘oyster,’ success story, there are thousands of casualties that will forever remain unknown. Deep in the recesses of time, some caveman or beach-dwelling ape not only discovered that oysters aren’t rocks but that they’re tasty—as long as you’ve got Tabasco and a date for the night. "Food and Fun!" according to Three Guys from Miami. We met Mark DeCarlo on a typically sultry Miami day back in 2005. DeCarlo was in Miami to tape two segments for his Travel Channel series, "Taste of America." The show, which left the air in 2008 after four hilarity-filled seasons, took viewers on a comically culinary tour of the United States. Each episode featured a different city and highlighted several local foods.DeCarlo has had an interesting career, from game show contestant to game show host; from stand-up comedian to roles on various TV series, including Seinfeld, Evening at the Improv, Matl. "I Really Enjoyed This" according to Tom Johnson. I don't want to make too big a deal out of this, but this book is a love letter to Americans in the same way as John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charlie." DeCarlo's no Steinbeck, of course, but he's an affectionate observer of character and -- as a comedian -- a funny storyteller.I was surprised how much I enjoyed the book. I liked the episodic informality of it, the pure-entertainment sidebars, even the pictures. It's one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time. It made me feel really good about this country.. Tremendous! Andrew "A Fork On The Road" makes you want to get up off your butt and go discover what's best, funniest, weirdest, and most delicious about this great country. DeCarlo writes with ease, humor, and confidence. His honest love for the people, places, and foods he comes across is evident on every page. He was lucky enough to have these amazing experiences for four years while making his TV show. Now we're lucky to be able to read about them. Buy this book, people. Seriously - it's more fun than going to sleep with a tub of frosting underneath your bed!
