Two years after her father’s death, 11-year-old Redi Tlhabi meets Mabegzo: handsome, charming, and smooth, but also a rumored gangster, murderer, and rapist. Following her emotional journey into the past to finally humanize Mabegzo, this account interviews the alleged criminal's family and friends. Against her family’s wishes, Redi develops a strong and sometimes uncomfortable attraction to him; she herself doesn’t understand why she is drawn to Mabegzo. As she fits together the pieces of the puzzle that was Mabegzo, Redi also finds peace and allows her demons to rest.. When he too is found lying dead in a pool of blood, as her father was, Redi has to try to stay sane
Kindle Customer said What a Joy To Read. Every once in a while I read a book that is so good it is not only hard to put down but allows me to be a part of their story. I was so immersed that I felt the pain, joy and resilience of a country that was desperately trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy under apartheid. This a true story of the young life of Redi Tlhabi, Johannesburg radio talk show host and broadcast journalist. It will definitely be added to my top ten greatest reads.. Endings and Beginnings - this story will stay with you Redi Thalbi's book Endings and Beginnings is an incredibly raw and insightful look at South African society. The book is set in a township in Johannesburg during the apartheid era but transcends the setting and explores gender relationships, poverty and the circumstances of (still) many South Africans. The book is also well incredibly well written and makes no judgement call on Mabegzo but explores his circumstances and that of his parents.I sincerely hope that Redi's book will be nominated for the Booker prize. Lara said A story of healing. Endings and Beginnings is a brave, frank and honest account of one young girl’s friendship with a very damaged young man who, had he been differently socialised, may have been known to more as the kind, gentle and loving friend that Redi knew. Proceeds from the book will go to a blind "A story of healing" according to Lara.
