DESCRIPTION:
The book is divided into the themes "sensing/feedback"; "interfacing/ enveloping"; "subverting/hijacking"; "formatting/ distributing"; "contingency/ resilience"; "diffusing/generating". In all cases, these examples explore how the notion of going soft can be iterated across professions, disciplines, and fields of research. Acknowledging fluid and indeterminate situations with complex feedback loops that allow for reaction and adaption, the possibility of soft systems has reentered the domain of design. The examples displayed in "Bracket goes soft" are offered as nothing more than a short catalog of soft systems--some explicitly architectural, others geological, others entirely metaphorical. From soft politics, soft power and soft spaces to fluid territories, software and soft program

Solid book about indeterminate systems in landscape architecture and urban design. Extensive set of thought-provoking speculative projects and essays on design projects that use flexible frameworks (and beautiful drawings and diagrams). Very useful inspiration for projects that engage with topics of seasonal change, anthropogenic urban flows, and aquatic design themes, among others. About 20% of the book is viewable on the Bracket issuu page, but it's a lovely. Hamer said Outdated projects you can look at Online. I bought this book helping that it would be interesting or helpful. It was not. To be clear, almost every image in this book is available free, online, from the websites of the designers. It is very unclear if there is a real methodological tack here or if there is any insight on the part of the author/editors but it is more or less an assemblage of already well-known projects most of which fall into the category of "speculative-academic-outdated" rather than
In brief, soft systems are those that are built to respond to or adapt to shifting conditions. This is a book for architects, designers, planners, philosophers, and, perhaps, science fiction writers seeking inspiration from some daring and imaginative thinkers. Editor Bhatia, an architect and urban planner affiliated with Rice U., and Sheppard, a Canadian-based architect, worked in conjunction with an editorial board consisting of seven other architects; all are actively involved in the cutting edges of thinking about design. The "Goes Soft" part of the title represents this year's theme, and the concept of "soft" is explained in an introductory essay and in sidebars throughout the book. About 30 such projects or designs are presented in text and images. Bracket is an annual publication concerned with the interconnections of architecture, the environment, and digital culture.
