DESCRIPTION:
Additional chapters deal with the problems associated with dual diagnosis--when addiction is accompanied by other psychiatric illnesses. Yet as a disease, addiction is still largely misunderstood.Starting with the question "what is addiction?" Elizabeth Connell Henderson takes the reader through the many facets of this disorder. Addiction and its consequences cost billions of dollars each year in direct medical costs, lost productivity, accidents, crime, and corruption. At least one of every four people in America has had some experience with addiction--either personally or through a family member. In the devel
About alcohol, Henderson says that, although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, psychiatry's bible, doesn't see alcoholism as a disease, it is in fact a "brain disorder" to which the will strongly contributes, for the "I-can-quit-anytime" response is mere denial. Five Stars Emmy great. "Very readable" according to A Customer. Having read a number of books and articles on the subject, I can say the this book is the most easily readable of all. It explains very complex topics in terms that lets one read and understand quickly, unlike many comprehensive texts that are not really directed to the layman.. Excellent Writing With Clarity This book is an informational text written in the style of a novel. I highly recommend it for students and laypersons who do not require the depth of a psychology textbook. The author knows how to write for the reader. It was a pleasure to read and was extremely informative. It covers many types of addictions and their treatments.
