This book is about an air training scheme in Canada that was developed by Great Britain during the First World War to redress the alarmingly high losses it sustained in trained airmen over the Western Front in 1916. As a result of these losses, in the short run, Britain was forced to cut corners in its own training of pilots. Consequently, through the summer of 1917, many rookie pilots in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) went into combat barely able to fly a plane, much less fight in one. The average longevity of an RFC pilot on the Western Front in early 1917 was 11 days.In the meantime, Britain had been in . "Good History Book" according to J'nell L. Pate. I needed this book for some research I was doing. It has an entire chapter on the topic in which I was interested. The Royal Canadian Flying Corps in World War I is a quite interesting story.. "Call me, Mr. Hunt" according to Castle Mclaughlin. This is a real contribution to WWI aviation history, and fills a gap in the literature. The author does a good job of organizing and presenting the story of the RFC in Canada.I'm unsure whether the author is a professional historian. There is an entire chapter on Vernon Castle, the world famous (British) dancer turned flying Ace-and his American wife, Irene Castle, who was my grandmother. Hunt bases much of his information about Vernon soley on interviews with the 80 yr old daughter of Castle's "girlfriend" during the time he was stationed in Canada (Vernon died the following year in Texas, where he was a
