DESCRIPTION:
Provoked by the need to protect American merchant shipping from the belligerent European nations and the piratical Barbary powers, Congress decided on a programme of frigate building, which included the 32-gun frigate Essex. Designed by William Hackett, Essex was a typical medium frigate of her time. On the successful completion of the War of Independence, the American navy was disbanded, and it was not until the late 1790s that a regular naval force was reconstituted. Working from both US and British sources, the author has reconstructed many previously undetermined details of the ship and in passing has rehabilitated the reputation of the designer as one who was responsible for one of the best balanced of that generation's frigates.
About the Author Portia Takakjian was a professional ship modeller who before devoting herself to modelling and to maritime research was a book illustrator. Her ships' plans collection is held by Mystic Seaport, The Museum of America and the Sea. Her early training is apparent in the quality of the draughtsmanship displayed in this book.
32 Gun Frigate Essex (Anatomy of the Ship Series) Portia Takajian's research and knowledge of ship design are a great aid in understanding the way this ship functioned. The details in this book are fantastic, and well presented. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in ships of the early Federal Navy.. The 32-gun frigate Essex I too would recommend this book to anyone interested in model ship building, technical drawing (or other artworks) concerning ships, or anyone interested in the great age sail so eloquently depicted by O'Brian and Forester. This book (and the others of it's series) are wonderful and extremely informative.. Joe Cigut said a great book for model builders. this book and others in the series are perfect for model builders or any one who is interested in fine details in ships.the amount of detail and general information in books of this series are the best i have found. i would recommend this books to anyone
